SUSTAINED INVESTIGATION
Theme: Insects and their folklore
Emphasis: Negative space, typography
01 MOTH
While butterflies represent rebirth, metamorphosis, and positive change, moths are often seen as bad omens that symbolize the fear of death and the unknown. The mystery of the moth is supported by the freehand typography. It also appears more confusing and dark because of the thick black lines and messy look. The eye sees everything.

After illustrating the design and creating it on Adobe Illustrator, I experimented with different mediums to put the design on. First, I did punch needle embroidery with embroidery floss on linen. Then, I engraved the design onto a piece of wood to create a wood block stamp and stamped it on cardstock.
02 SPIDER
Spiders often symbolize the devouring mother archetype. The archetype refers to mothers who selfishly and excessively love their children; they consume them both psychologically and emotionally. These mothers are protective of their children to the point of obsession, controlling every aspect of their life.

The spider's limbs form a heart to further emphasize the idea of a woman blinded by her motherly instincts.

For the final product, I hand-embroidered the design onto cotton using black embroidery floss. The process took a few weeks due to the detail in the spider. I also engraved it into a wood block a stamped it on cardstock with a mix of magenta and black ink.
