SELF-IDENTITY

The goal of this project was to display how others view me compared to who I truly am.

The large arrows pointing towards me represent how others perceive me while the smaller arrows pointing outwards describe who I truly am with respect to the large arrows. The large arrows seem to overpower the small ones. I seem smart, but I am just diligent in my work. I appear calm and collected, however I am always anxious. It seems as though I am constantly guarded, but I am just introverted. Many different textures and patterns were used to represent the complexity of my character. I used the corkboard material to draw attention to me, but I also added it behind the canvas to balance it out. All of the elements are raised on screws to create dimension and layers. I further established the radial pattern made by the arrows with chains made of safety pins. There are buttons snaps on the side as well. The safety pins and snaps illustrate my tendency to chain myself down and hide my feelings to protect myself.

RECIPE

ho.c.2a.png

This project was making a recipe graphic on food or dessert that ties to our culture/heritage.

I chose Halo-Halo, a Filipino cold dessert. It has crushed/shaved ice, evaporated and condensed milk, and a variety of different ingredients mixed in including sweet beans, ube, coconut, leche flan, jelly, and jackfruit. Halo-Halo is very popular in the Philippines and is served all year long.

PROCESS

  1. Plan out recipe text

  2. Thumbnail sketch

  3. Create the pattern on Adobe Illustrator

  4. Cut the pattern out to create a stencil

  5. Paint over the stencil

IMAGINATION THRIVES! CONTEST

The theme of this contest was "Imagination Thrives!"

I am fascinated with the human body so my initial sketches included the heart and brain mixed with other elements. When thinking of the word imagination, I always envision rainbows or creativity flowing from the brain. I wanted to try to create a literal interpretation of that idea.

The theme "Imagination Thrives!" sounds very positive, but my art style is not the most happy-looking, so I added elements that commonly symbolize happiness: a rainbow and a sun.

I noticed some of my sketches were a little too disturbing for a competition, so I toned it down. I did not completely remove the unsettling aspect of the design, though.

I titled the poster "incessant sun"

I experimented a lot while designing this poster.

I made the shading out of clusters of tiny ellipses, making the shapes look grainy and more textured. I also experimented with color and blending modes.

SHE KILLS MONSTERS

She-Kills-Monsters-Slide-1.png

She Kills Monsters is a virtual play by Qui Nguyen following Agnes's journey through Dungeons and Dragons.

I sketched out part of the dragon before detailing it with ink. I then edited the final illustration in Photoshop and separated the dragon into multiple components to combine it with the elements designed on Adobe Illustrator.
